Description

Windows Remote Desktop Services is a technology that lets users remotely execute applications on Windows Server. This can be done from a wide range of devices over virtually any type of network connection. Clients are available for a variety of operating systems and can be downloaded from Microsoft's website. A Windows Remote Desktop Services client access license (CAL) is required for each device or user accessing Windows Remote Desktop Services.

This offer provides one user CAL. A user CAL authorizes a user to access Windows Remote Desktop Services from any device. An example would be when an employee accesses the server from a computer at work and another at home. Device CALs for licensing computers and external connector licenses (ECLs) for licensing a significant number of external users are also available. Please note that an organization with a Windows Remote Desktop Services CAL still has to acquire a Windows Server CAL for each device or user accessing Windows Server.

Which Version Do I need?

Windows Remote Desktop Services CALs must correspond to the version of Windows Server that the user or device is connecting to. You can't use older CALs to access newer Windows Server versions, but you can use newer CALs to access earlier versions of Windows Server. See Microsoft's suppport page for more information.

This license will work for the latest versions of Windows Server.

Quantity

Organizations can request an unlimited number of discounted products from Microsoft.

Requests that an organization places for discounted products must include at least five licenses. The five licenses can be for the same product or a combination of different products. This requirement is waived for some products.

Additional Information

For additional information about the available editions of Windows Server and the server and client licensing requirements, see the Guide to Windows Server Editions and Licensing.

License Only

This license does not require media, license keys, or setup codes.

CALs, ECLs, and management licenses (MLs) offered through TechSoup Canada are always for the currently offered version of the server software. However, these licenses can also be used with earlier versions of the server software.

Obtaining This Product

Remote Desktop Services CALs are different from other Windows Server CALs because they require a license key from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) for installation.

Expect two emails:

  1. When your request has been approved, TechSoup Canada will send a message to your organization email address. This email will confirm the number of licenses you have requested and provide information about how to use the VLSC once Microsoft accepts your license agreement. Make sure the email address in your organization details is up to date by visiting your account.
  2. Microsoft will send an email welcoming your organization to the VLSC. This email will indicate that Microsoft has accepted your license agreement. After you receive this email, you'll be able to follow the steps in the first email you received from TechSoup Canada to obtain your product through the VLSC.
